BUILDING PEACE TOGETHER "Then the people rejoiced because these had given willingly, for with single mind they had offered freely to the LORD" I Chronicles 29:9. This is the theme and verse for our freedom campaign.....to be free from debt for greater mission in the world but more importantly to increase our faith and expand our vision.
Songs of the Faithful: Studies in Psalms
For most of September and October the Psalm will be the focal lesson for preaching. While included in the lectionary, the Psalms often take a secondary role to the other readings of the day. Six themes will be explored in this sermon series: choice, despair, hope, trust, listening, and praise & proclamation. The Psalms are the first hymns and prayers of the church. They represent poems, prayers, and hymnody sung by real people living with the pains and challenges of real human life. They are human cries to God, humans hoping that God is listening to their shaky voices. They are also the people's praise to God for all the grace and mercy God has showered upon them. The themes within the Psalms were not just lived by people long ago. They are found over and over in human life, as similar challenges are experienced throughout the generations.
Thanksgiving Night in the Hunger Fight
St. Andrew Lutheran Church is hosting our sixth year with our fund raiser event, "Thanksgiving Night in the Hunger Fight" on Friday, November 19, 2010. We would like to invite Peace Lutheran Church to join us in the fight for hunger and to feed the children in Haiti. The purpose of the event is to raise money to feed the children who attend Christian schools in Haiti. Below are ways to get involved.
1. Attend the "Thanksgiving Night in the Hunger Fight. We serve a Thanksgiving meal with all the trimmings, hold a silent auction and a live auction of donated items to raise funds to feed the children. 100% of the money raised will go to feed the children.
2. Either donate or help secure auction items or services. . A tax exempt letter will be provided for donations after we receive them.
3. Help with the meal or in another capacity on the planning committee
If you can help in any way please call Jolene Richardson at 794-1624 or email her at office@saintandrewchurch.com. Haiti is the poorest country in our Western Hemisphere. It is even more dire right now for our friends in Haiti as they struggle to recover from the devastating earthquake. The sad statistics are that 90% of the children have no breakfast coming to school, 20% have only enough to eat at home at night to be satisfied and half of the children in Haiti do not have food in a 24-hour period. Through our feeding program with Trinity/HOPE, children are provided a simple noon meal of beans, rice and a sauce each day. The cost of feeding each child is $.25 per day. For more information on Trinity HOPE-SPONSORED schools, please visit www.trinityhope.org.
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is already working through long-standing partnerships with The Lutheran World Federation and Lutheran World Relief to provide emergency food, water, shelter and medical supplies to those affected by disaster....such as the flooding in Nashville as well Haiti and Chile. This church is uniquely positioned to provide immediate and ongoing help. And when the dust settles and the headlines change ELCA Disaster Response stays to provide ongoing assistance to those in need. Welcoming Tennessee Update
One of our core values at Peace is that All Are Welcome. Voting members at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Churchwide Assembly voted overwhelmingly on August 19, 2009 to urge reform in the nation's current immigration policy. By a vote of 873 to 82, voters agreed to urge comprehensive reform of U.S. immigration policies and processes, and to call for suspension of immigration raids until such reform is enacted.
